Leviticus 19:3 NLT
“Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I am the Lord your God.”
Charity begins at home
In today’s scripture reference, the Lord issued two essential instructions for the entire Israelite community to follow. Firstly, He emphasized the significance of showing profound respect for one’s mother and father. This respect was not to be confined to the private sphere; it was meant to be displayed publicly. Notably, the instruction held no conditions. God did not specify that only affluent or influential parents deserved great respect from their children. The respect was not contingent on any factors.
Additionally, the Lord stressed that this respect should be centred on each child. This underscores the notion that each child must prioritize showing respect to their own parents, as charity should start at home. Displaying great respect for other parents while neglecting one’s own isn’t in line with what God expects from any of us.
