Leviticus 18:8 NLT
“Do not have sexual relations with any of your father’s wives, for this would violate your father.”
Fight the good fight
In his letter to Timothy, Paul repeatedly emphasized the importance of “fighting the good fight” (1 Timothy 1:18 & 6:12). In 2 Timothy 4:7, he affirmed that he had indeed fought the good fight, underscoring that he had practiced what he preached. Fighting the good fight has nothing to do with physical confrontation; instead, it is a call to combat ungodliness with godliness. It emphasizes the rejection of name-calling, character assassination, or any form of physical abuse, instead advocating for the pursuit of righteousness.
The referenced scripture sheds light on a prevailing societal norm among the Israelites. Their men married more than one wife; otherwise, there wouldn’t have been a divine instruction addressing the fallout. Yet, God didn’t call out the men but warned their sons because such a family structure muddled the familial dynamics and created many conflicts, ultimately leading those directly impacted to seek retribution through immoral actions, such as engaging in inappropriate relationships. So, does God approve of polygamy? Friends, as long as God isn’t fighting a battle, don’t get involved, and even if He is fighting a battle, do not get involved because He can fight for Himself.
