Leviticus 18:28 NLT
“So do not defile the land and give it a reason to vomit you out, as it will vomit out the people who live there now.”
The ball is in your court
A while ago, a man visited Nigeria after years of residency in North America. Throughout the trip, he did something remarkable. He refused to litter, instead holding onto his trash until he found a trash can. While this may seem like common sense to someone from North America, it was an uncommon practice in the country he visited.
In today’s referenced scripture, we read that the inhabitants of the land where God was taking the people of Israel had defiled the land. Both young and old, men and women, were guilty of polluting their surroundings. As a consequence, they faced the repercussions. What’s intriguing is that it wasn’t God who expelled them for defiling the land; instead, it was the land itself, as God had endowed it with the ability to do so.
God warned the people of Israel that their conduct on the land would determine their duration of stay there. If they followed the path of the previous occupants, the Lord informed them that they would experience the same outcome. It is a reminder that God’s promises do not give us licenses to behave recklessly.
