Leviticus 18:18 NLT
“While your wife is living, do not marry her sister and have sexual relations with her, for they would be rivals.”
Don’t trigger rivalry
In Yoruba culture, there is an unspoken mannerism regarding marriage. The culture believes that sisters should not get married to men from the same family. Yet engagement anchors often sing that the groom’s family will return next year to marry the family. What an irony of life!
As followers of Christ, our modus operandi is God’s word. Concerning marital choice, the Lord does not permit a man to marry his wife’s sister while she’s living. In other words, the man can only do so if his wife is no more. Truth be told, not many families would want to offer the hands of another daughter to the same person in marriage.
Another insight from the scripture centers on the implication that whoever chooses to do it must deal with it. Marrying the sister of one’s wife does not violate the wife or husband, and it is not considered a wicked act, but it would create issues of unimaginable scale for the man.
Friends, don’t complicate your life through your actions. Stick with God, and His peace will not be out of reach for you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me never to underestimate the consequences of my actions, but always follow Your will. This I ask in Jesus’s name. Amen.
