Leviticus 18:16 NLT
“Do not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife, for this would violate your brother.”
Love your brother
During job training, I learned about two types of power people wield in the workplace: positional and personal. If left unchecked, these powers can be misused.
In every family, there is an interplay of positional and personal power. For example, having money confers personal power, as does having access to food. Throughout history, access to these resources has been used to take advantage of others. For instance, Esau sold his firstborn right because Jacob wielded personal power over him. Similarly, Leah denied Rachel access to Jacob for a night because of the mandrakes.
While meditating on today’s referenced scripture, I thought about what could facilitate the cowardly act that the Lord warned a man not to do to his brother’s wife, and the power imbalance came to my mind. How could a person do such a thing to his brother’s wife if not for having something the other person doesn’t have? If you want to help, do so without placing conditions. Do not use the resources that God has given you to lead others into ungodly behaviour.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please always remind me that the power given to me, in the form of access to materials, is to help and not hurt others. This I ask in Jesus’s name. Amen.
