Leviticus 17:6 NLT
“Then the priest will be able to splatter the blood against the Lord’s altar at the entrance of the Tabernacle, and he will burn the fat as a pleasing aroma to the Lord.”
The Lord’s altar
In the scripture referenced today, it is emphasized that the act of slaughtering a goat or bull for sacrifices holds no significance unless the blood is splattered against the Lord’s altar at the entrance of the Tabernacle. Interestingly, the privilege of performing this act is granted only to the priest. This highlights the importance of adhering to the prescribed roles within the community. If individuals were to take it upon themselves to perform the sacrifices, it would undermine the duties designated to the priest, ultimately leading to the loss of the intended benefits associated with the sacrifices.
Furthermore, the scripture is a cautionary reminder that unauthorized engagement in certain endeavours can lead to adverse consequences. It indicates that individuals should not partake in activities for which they lack authorization, as doing so may disrupt the assigned responsibilities of others and result in serious repercussions (2 Chronicles 26:16-18; 1 Samuel 13:8-14).
The emphasis on the Lord’s possession of the altar at the Tabernacle’s entrance clearly indicates that not all altars are consecrated to God. Therefore, sacrificing on alternative altars could potentially lead to engagement in idolatry. This underscores the importance of seeking divine guidance and discernment before participating in any form of worship or sacrifice, as not all places that may be labelled as altars are intended for offerings to God.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that I will not hinder anyone in their service to You. I also pray that the Holy Spirit will guide me so that I will only “sacrifice my praise” on Your altar. Please help me, Lord. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
