Leviticus 17:15 NLT
“And if any native-born Israelites or foreigners eat the meat of an animal that died naturally or was torn up by wild animals, they must wash their clothes and bathe themselves in water. They will remain ceremonially unclean until evening, but then they will be clean.”
Wash clothes and bathe in water
Governments worldwide enforce strict penalties for misconduct, which are either monetary fines or reduced social interactions. The main purpose is to discourage people from engaging in such behaviour. If penalties for misconduct are lenient, it can lead to repeated offences. In the Bible, God imposed penalties on a particular eating endeavour so that the Israelites would not decimate their population all in the name of enjoyment.
Although the penalties may seem minor today, such as using water for washing clothes and bathing, they were significant in the Bible times, especially during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. Therefore, the penalties mentioned about obtaining water for washing and bathing were not trivial matters. The lesson here is that not all choices are without consequences. The message is clear – we should avoid placing ourselves in risky situations for the sake of momentary pleasure and should align our actions with God’s will.
Prayer
Living God, please help me align my desires to what You expressly approve. Please help me to detach my mind from momentary pleasure that ends in everlasting sorrow. In the name of Jesus, I ask. Amen.
