Leviticus 17:14 NLT
“The life of every creature is in its blood. That is why I have said to the people of Israel, ‘You must never eat or drink blood, for the life of any creature is in its blood.’ So whoever consumes blood will be cut off from the community.”
Our family’s values
The first time I left home for school, my mother said, “Remember whose son you are.” In other words, I must behave according to our family’s values and not imitate others’ behaviour. Similarly, the Lord does not want us to emulate the world’s behaviour. In today’s referenced scripture, the Lord communicated to the people of Israel that the life of every creature is in its blood, emphasizing the importance of this fact. He personalized the message for the people of Israel to internalize. While others may choose to behave differently, those in a covenant with God cannot act as they wish. Just as God did not give the people of Israel leeway, anyone in God has no room for complacency (John 15:1-5).
Another intriguing question is why God would prohibit people from consuming blood since it is a source of life. Allowing this would make everyone vulnerable. As God is the provider of all things and we are encouraged to seek Him for our needs, it is the best way. We should not rely on our efforts but on God’s saving grace, embodied in the completed work of salvation on the cross at Calvary. If you need life, do not take it from another being; seek the giver of life for renewal (John 14:6).

Living God, please help me in my walk with You to value what You value at all times and in all situations. In the name of Jesus, I ask. Amen.
