Leviticus 17:1 NLT
“Then the Lord said to Moses,”
Obedience is rewarding
It’s important to remember that scripture was not originally divided into chapters and verses. In AD 1227, Professor Stephen Langston, who later became the Archbishop of Canterbury, created chapters and verses in the Old Testament. Later, in AD 1551, Robert Stephanus did the same for the New Testament. These divisions were human inventions and continue to shape how we engage with scripture. Even though today’s referenced scripture is one of the shortest verses in the Bible, the message is still profound.
This scripture verse begins with the word ‘then,’ which implies ‘after that.’ What happened before the Lord spoke to Moses? In Leviticus 16:34, we read, “Moses did everything just as the Lord commanded him.” In a nutshell, Moses was obedient, and the outcome is recorded in Leviticus 17, verse 1. God rewards obedience to His instructions. So, how are you currently following divine instructions? Are you following them diligently or selectively? Moses was a man just like us, and he obeyed the instructions, which allowed the Lord to reveal more insights to him. You, too, can follow God’s instructions diligently, and you will be glad you did!

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that I will honour Your instructions and attend to all exactly as You desire, never treating them lackadaisically. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
