Leviticus 16:34 NLT
“This is a permanent law for you, to purify the people of Israel from their sins, making them right with the Lord once each year.” Moses followed all these instructions exactly as the Lord had commanded him.”
Do you know your responsibilities?
Years ago, a Nigerian soccer player who usually played as an attacking midfielder was converted to a defensive midfielder by his coach. In this new role, he no longer focused on scoring goals.
Today’s scripture reveals that God clearly defines each person’s responsibilities when He calls someone into his service. This scripture states that the high priest’s duty was to reconcile the people of Israel with God. Interestingly, the high priest had to perform this duty only once a year.
The lesson here is that we need to seek guidance from the Holy Spirit to understand God’s purpose for us. When Paul encountered the Lord Jesus, his first question was, “Lord, what do you want me to do?”
This scripture also connects to our salvation. The high priest’s ability to atone for sins was limited to once a year. So, what happened to anyone who died before the Day of Atonement? However, through the finished work of salvation, which the Lord Jesus achieved through His sacrifice, our atonement is eternal and does not require renewal.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, please help me not to become fixated by other people’s responsibilities in Your vineyard. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
