Leviticus 16:31 NLT
“It will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. This is a permanent law for you.”
A permanent law for “you”
In our study, we have explored the importance of the Day of Atonement as described in the scriptures. We have learned that the Lord expected the people of Israel to practice self-denial on this solemn and significant day. The word “you” in the scripture refers explicitly to the people of Israel, emphasizing that everyone should adhere to the prescribed observances. It is important to note that the Lord emphasized that this instruction is a permanent law, highlighting its lasting significance.
Now, the question arises: Do Christians break the rules by not following the instructions for the Day of Atonement? The answer is no. This is because the arrival of Christ Jesus brought about a new covenant, making the levitical laws no longer applicable. His message of grace and truth surpasses the strict requirements of ceremonial laws. As followers of Christ, we are not obligated to follow ceremonial laws and are freed from the consequences of not observing them.
Prayer
Dear God, please help me to take Your instructions seriously. Please help me understand that through Jesus, I have access to immeasurable grace and truth concerning matters that bring glory to God. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
