Leviticus 16:31 NLT
“It will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. This is a permanent law for you.”
Deny yourself
The Day of Atonement held a distinctive place among the gatherings of the old covenant because it was marked by solemnity and introspection rather than celebration. On this appointed day, every member of the household of Israel was required to observe a fast to show how sorry they were for their sins, iniquities, and transgressions. The Lord mandated that the Day of Atonement be observed on a Sabbath, a day of rest and cessation from labour, thus allowing everyone to partake in it.
The obligation to fast falling on a day of rest rather than a working day is a demonstration of God’s compassion. It is important to stress that the Lord wanted each person to be personally responsible for denying themselves, as there were no enforcers. As followers of Christ, the onus is for us to embrace a daily practice of denial. No one enforces it but us. The denial that Jesus spoke about isn’t for showing remorsefulness but a condition of being His disciples (Luke 9:23), and it is more than just abstaining from food and water; it involves taking up our cross daily and following our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at all times.
Prayer
Dear God, please help me not to shy away from the responsibility of denying myself and carrying my cross daily to follow You. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
