Leviticus 16:29 NLT
“On the tenth day of the appointed month in early autumn, you must deny yourselves. Neither native-born Israelites nor foreigners living among you may do any kind of work. This is a permanent law for you.”
Is your heart contrite?
In the passage we’ve covered so far, we’ve learned about the various responsibilities assigned to Aaron, the individual tasked with driving the scapegoat to the wilderness of Azazel, and the person responsible for burning the animals’ hides, internal organs, and dung on the Day of Atonement. However, there was an additional responsibility that fell upon all the people of Israel. On the Day of Atonement, a crucial day when Aaron, as the High Priest, makes an atoning sacrifice for the sins, transgressions, and iniquities of the people of Israel, it was essential for everyone to deny themselves, or better yet, to observe a fast. This day was designated as a national fast day, and the fasting served as a tangible sign of repentance for their sins, transgressions, and iniquities. Furthermore, the day needed to be treated as a sabbath, prohibiting engaging in any ordinary work. These precise instructions were reiterated in Numbers 29, verse 7, underscoring the gravity of the matter. It’s worth noting that fasting is a visible manifestation of repentance; hence, it’s unsurprising that the king of Nineveh commanded his people to fast when Jonah delivered the divine message regarding the city’s fate. However, it’s important to recognize that a contrite heart holds greater significance than fasting. This prompts us to reflect on our lives – do our actions and attitudes reflect a genuinely repentant heart?
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus. Through His death, resurrection, and ascension, I received forgiveness for my misdeeds. Please help me always display a contrite heart for You. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
