Leviticus 16:12 NLT
“he will fill an incense burner with burning coals from the altar that stands before the Lord. Then he will take two handfuls of fragrant powdered incense and will carry the burner and the incense behind the inner curtain.”
Behind the inner curtain
Walking with God involves paying close attention to details and following instructions to the letter. Today’s scripture passage highlights an interesting point: incense burning is not a stand-alone instruction. It is a task that can only happen after another task has been completed. Specifically, according to the scripture, the burning incense only occurred after the bull for Aaron’s sin offering had been slaughtered.
Moreover, the Lord provided specific instructions regarding the quantity of fragrant powdered incense to add to the incense burner. He commanded Aaron to add two handfuls of the fragrance, and the quantity must not be less or more than specified.
Likewise, the incense was burned not in the entire Tabernacle but in a specific place. The Lord instructed that it must only occur behind the inner curtain, i.e., in the holy of holies, which was a symbolic act representing the prayers of God’s people rising to Him. It was also a reminder that God is holy and that only the High Priest could approach Him, and only after performing specific rituals and sacrifices.
The finished work of salvation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ permanently ended the need for bull sacrifice and incense burning. The Lord Jesus made Himself the ultimate sacrifice for our sins and became a sweet-smelling savour to our heavenly Father. Friends, as followers of Christ, you need nothing to bring our supplication to God’s attention except Jesus’s name.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I place my only hope and assurance of salvation in the finished work of Jesus Christ. I humbly ask that You help me to always trust in this truth. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
