Leviticus 16:10 NLT
“The other goat, the scapegoat chosen by lot to be sent away, will be kept alive, standing before the Lord. When it is sent away to Azazel in the wilderness, the people will be purified and made right with the Lord.”
Chosen by what?
The process used to determine the scapegoat was the same as the one used to choose items by lot. However, there is a significant difference between these two methods. Choosing items by lot is not a definitive answer, and it gives man control instead of leaving it to God. In contrast, choosing items via ephod does the opposite by giving God control.
It’s noteworthy that God instructed Aaron to use the lot method, and Aaron, without hesitation, followed God’s guidance. This demonstrates Aaron’s unwavering trust in God’s decision-making process, even when it was beyond his full comprehension. Our understanding of God is crucial in how we relate to Him. The closer we walk with Him, the more we realize that human knowledge cannot substitute for His wisdom. In other words, our knowledge of God will determine how we relate to Him. It is essential to know Him better to understand His ways, and this can be achieved through studying His word and spending time with Him in prayer.
This is why Jesus did not reinstate the lot procedure but instead sent the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us into truth. The Holy Spirit is our helper, teacher, and guide, and He reveals the will of God to us. Therefore, we should follow the instructions of the Holy Spirit because they are never random or based on majority rule. The Holy Spirit’s guidance is personal and tailored to our situations, always leading us to the truth (John 16:13).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit. Please help me to always depend on Him for all my decisions. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
