Leviticus 16:10 NLT
“The other goat, the scapegoat chosen by lot to be sent away, will be kept alive, standing before the Lord. When it is sent away to Azazel in the wilderness, the people will be purified and made right with the Lord.”
Jesus fulfilled both conditions
As one delves deeper into the Scriptures, a profound appreciation for the finished work of our Lord and Savior’s salvation on the cross at Calvary begins to take root. It is important to note that under the Old Testament, two goats were required to purify and make the house of Israel right with the Lord. The sin offering was only complete; the chosen goat for the offering was sacrificed, and the scapegoat was sent to the wilderness of Azazel. The entire process would become null and void if either was performed without the other.
However, our Lord and Savior, Jesus, God’s Son, fulfilled both conditions. He shed His blood as the propitiation for our sins, which also occurred outside the city. His crucifixion symbolized how the scapegoat was sent out of the town. This means that we are purified and made right with God in Him. Only through faith in Him can we be saved and made righteous. Thus, let us put our trust in Him and be grateful for the salvation that He has provided for us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me to always appreciate the finished work of salvation that Jesus purchased with blood. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
