Leviticus 15:8 NLT
”If the man spits on you, you must wash your clothes and bathe yourself in water, and you will remain unclean until evening.“
If the man spits on you…
Spitting is regarded as an expression of disgust or unpleasantness in most societies. People often spit when they encounter a foul smell or odour. The usual practice is that the “clean” spits at the “unclean.” So, when the reverse occurs, it is a course of concern.
In the referenced scripture, the Lord stated that a man who is ceremonially unclean could spit on anyone ceremonially clean. This raises the question of why a ceremonially unclean person would intentionally spit on someone else, knowing full well the meaning of the act.
One possible explanation for such behaviour could be an attitude of arrogance or a “holier than thou” mindset of the ceremonially clean towards the ceremonially unclean. If someone who considers themselves ceremonially pure looks down on others, they perceive as impure; therefore, the ceremonially unclean may feel justified in spitting on them. However, this misguided and harmful attitude only creates division and sows discord.
Another reason is that the ceremonially unclean person might feel that others must drink from the “cup” like him. This is a dangerous and unhealthy mindset we should strive to avoid when in an unbecoming situation. Instead, we must not avenge any insults people throw at us during our challenging seasons. As children of God, we must never forget to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I ask for the enablement to remain humble and loving in every challenge that may come my way. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
