Blood and water: the double cure
According to the Old Testament, if a house was suspected of being contaminated by mildew, it was the priest’s responsibility to purify it. The purification process involved slaughtering a bird over a clay pot filled with fresh water. The bird’s blood was believed to contain purifying powers to cleanse the house of mildew contamination.
Similarly, if we feel that our body, which is the Temple of God, has been invaded by the mildew of this age, such as bitterness, rage, anger, backbiting, and greed, we need to purify ourselves. However, we don’t need to slaughter any animal or bird because Jesus shed His blood for us on the cross at Calvary.
Therefore, we need to grant Jesus permanent access to our lives just as the homeowners in the Old Testament did whenever the priest was to purify their homes. Unlike them, we can plead the blood of the Lamb of God and sanctify ourselves by the truth, for His word is truth (John 17:17; Ephesians 5:26).
Prayer
Rock of Ages, please cleft for me and let me hide myself in You. Let the water and the blood, from thy wounded side which flowed; be of sin the double care; save from wrath and make me pure. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
