Leviticus 14:43-44 NLT
”But if the mildew reappears after all the stones have been replaced and the house has been scraped and replastered, the priest must return and inspect the house again. If he finds that the mildew has spread, the walls are clearly contaminated with a serious mildew, and the house is defiled.“
Return and inspect
Psalm 8 is a beautiful expression of King David’s awe at the extent of God’s attention and care for His creation. David marvels at the cosmic scale of God’s creation; despite this vastness, God still pays attention to the smallest details of human life. David asks, “What is man that you are mindful of him?” and acknowledges the profound mystery of God’s love and concern for humanity.
God’s care for us extends beyond what we can comprehend. It includes everything we own, every aspect of our lives. This is why the passage we explore today, Leviticus 14:43-44, speaks of the priest’s role in checking a house after it has been repaired. The priest must ensure that the house is clean and safe to inhabit. If the repairs were successful, the owner can move back in. But if the house is still contaminated with mildew, it is considered defiled.
This is because what is inside a person or a house affects what is outside. The Bible teaches that our inner selves, thoughts, and beliefs shape our outward behaviour and appearance. This is why King David, in Psalm 51, speaks of the importance of truth in the inward parts. If we are pure and righteous on the inside, it will show on the outside, too.
In conclusion, God’s mindfulness of us is beautiful and mysterious. He cares for us in every aspect of our lives, which extends to the buildings we inhabit. As we seek to live in a way that honours God, let us remember that our inner selves must be pure and holy if we are to reflect His love and care to the world around us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You desire truth in the inward part. Please help me to ensure that the “walls of my heart” are not contaminated so that my worship shall be accepted. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
