Leviticus 14:14 NLT
”The priest will then take some of the blood of the guilt offering and apply it to the lobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person being purified.“
The blood of the guilt offering
The Lord gave Moses instructions on how to consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve as priests. These instructions included the use of blood to sanctify the priest for service. Similarly, the priest was instructed on how to purify a person healed from a serious skin disease. This purification process involved the application of ram’s blood on specific areas in the body of the person being purified, which was also considered as sanctification.
The use of the lamb’s blood was symbolic and pointed toward the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The lamb’s blood could sanctify the priest and the person healed from a severe skin disease, but it could not remove the blemish of the disease on the person being purified. No wonder that years after Simon the leper was healed, he was still addressed by the condition (Matthew 26:6). However, the blood of Jesus, which was shed on the cross, sanctifies and cleanses us from all sin.
Therefore, the application of the lamb’s blood was a foreshadowing of what Christ would do for us. Through his death and resurrection, we are sanctified and made clean. The blood of the Lamb of God is more powerful than the blood of the lamb since it not only sanctifies but also removes all stains of sin from our lives.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please sanctify me with the blood of Jesus that speaks better things than the blood of any animal. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
