Leviticus 13:53-54 NLT
”But if the priest examines it and finds that the contaminated area has not spread in the clothing, the fabric, or the leather, the priest will order the object to be washed and then quarantined for seven more days.“
Wash and quarantine the garment
In today’s referenced scripture, the Lord instructed the priests on how to deal with contaminated clothing that has not spread. According to the instructions, if a garment shows signs of contamination, the priest must examine it, and if the contaminated area has not spread, the garment must be washed. Interestingly, it was not just the affected section that needed to be washed but everything. After washing, the garment must be quarantined for further observation.
The washing of the garment and the subsequent quarantine process were symbolic. The washing symbolizes the cleansing power of the word of God, which is needed during times of stress and uncertainty. The quarantine process represented the need for isolation and introspection, which are necessary for spiritual growth.
In his letter to the church in Ephesus, Paul used an euphemism to state the importance of the word of God. He referred to it as the “washing of water with the word” (Ephesians 5:26), which means that the word of God has a cleansing effect on our lives. It washes away impurities, not just on the surface but deep within our hearts, transforming us into Christ’s image.
Therefore, the instruction in Leviticus regarding the treatment of contaminated clothing has a more profound spiritual significance. It reminds us of the importance of the word of God in our lives, especially during times of crisis. Just as the washing of the garment was necessary for cleansing, so also the word of God is essential for our spiritual cleansing and growth.
