Leviticus 12:2 NLT
“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. If a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son, she will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her menstrual period.”
Not a permanent injunction
It’s important to understand that both genders are equally valued before God and that no gender is inferior to the other. According to the scripture, giving birth is one of the human experiences that can make a woman ceremonially unclean. However, this ceremonial uncleanliness does not refer to sinfulness but impurity.
The scripture states that a woman is ceremonially unclean for seven days after giving birth to a male child. Even if the woman has multiple births, the number of days of ceremonial uncleanliness remains the same. This indicates that the purpose of the instruction was not to burden anyone or discourage childbirth.
Interestingly, God did not specify that this is a permanent instruction that must be forever observed. Through the death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we have been redeemed from our impurity. Therefore, God no longer sees any woman who is in Christ and has given birth as impure. In Jesus, all things are made new (Revelation 21:5).
Prayer
Dear God, please help me not to turn a shadow into reality. Help me to know that being in Christ removes every form of impurity. In Jesus’s name, amen.
