Leviticus 8:15 NLT
“and Moses slaughtered it. Moses took some of the blood, and with his finger he put it on the four horns of the altar to purify it. He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. Through this process, he made the altar holy by purifying it.”
Which altar?
In Leviticus 8:10, the scripture says that Moses made the Tabernacle and its contents holy by anointing them. In light of today’s referenced scripture, one may wonder why there was a need to anoint the altar. Was the altar not in the Tabernacle? It’s important to note that there were two altars – one inside the Tabernacle and one outside. The anointing in verse 10 only applied to the altar inside the Tabernacle, which is why it was necessary to purify the one outside. This purification was crucial because the altar inside couldn’t function until the one outside was ready. Everything matters to God!
Interestingly, the altar of burnt offerings was made holy using the blood of a bull rather than oil, like the Tabernacle and its contents, including the altar of incense. Moses was the one who performed the first purification of the burnt offering altar, which was a significant act. This showcased his love for both God and people. If he didn’t care, he might have kept the procedures to himself and left Aaron to figure things out alone. But Moses did everything he could to ensure Aaron understood how to perform his duties to God’s satisfaction.
We can learn from Moses’s example and strive to do everything we can to please God and help others do the same. It’s admirable to take the time to guide others and help them understand how to perform their divine duties, just as Moses did for Aaron.
Prayer
Dear God, as I read Your word, I learned that Moses instructed Aaron on how to perform their duties in a manner that pleased You. I humbly request that Your Holy Spirit guide me in worshipping You with sincerity and truthfulness. I pray for this in Jesus’s name. Amen.
