Leviticus 5:4 NLT
“Or suppose you make a foolish vow of any kind, whether its purpose is for good or for bad. When you realize its foolishness, you must admit your guilt.”

It is inherent in all humans to engage in the act of creating impressions. We do not just impress one another, but sometimes we try it with God through our vows. However, not all vows are acceptable to God. Even though vows seem set in stone, today’s referenced scripture reveals that one could get out of it, provided the individual would admit that they made such vows in error. For instance, Jephthah’s vow could be considered a harsh one and could be mitigated or even reversed, as he wasn’t under any rule or compulsion to fulfil it. It was not as though God would hound him. All Jephthah could have done was to admit his wrong, and the case would have been settled. But Jephthah chose a different route. Perhaps he wanted to be remembered as someone that kept his word or was afraid of what those who knew about his vow would say. But a simple “I’m sorry” to God would have ironed it out, and there wouldn’t have been any retribution for his actions. Even under the law, God gave a way of escape, but not everyone pursued it for reasons best known to them, and they bore the brunt. Jesus, the Only Begotten Son, gave His life so that we can be free from the guilt of sin, including any foolish vows; let us humble ourselves and be free from the entrapment of our mouths.

Prayer
Dear Father, may I never be beclouded by pride or what others would say or think, but let Your will alone matter to me. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
