Exodus 40:27 NLT
“On it he burned the fragrant incense, just as the Lord had commanded him.”
On the altar of incense
A Yoruba adage says it is common sense to surmise that an individual with a pot is heading to a stream to fetch or draw water. Hence it is a waste of time to ask where s/he is going. In the same vein, one could also surmise that Moses had no other place to burn the incense except on the altar. Hence the information that he burned fragrance incense on the altar could be regarded as a no-brainer or asking the obvious. However, the truth is that Moses’s action was not a no-brainer. The reason is that the children of Israel were not strangers to incense burning. They did it while in the land of Egypt but followed a different pattern. The fact that Moses didn’t follow the norm perhaps was the reason his way was documented for others to note and follow. Friends, what you know or have been told might not necessarily be God’s way; hence let’s get to know God, which, in turn, would reveal His instructions to us.
Prayer
Everlasting King, You are interested in how Your tasks are carried out. Please help me to shut the door against all forms of distractions but only perform each task as instructed by You. In Jesus’s name, amen.
